Monday September 12 – Burgeo

The endless highway to Burgeo

Town of Buck Lake
It took nearly four hours to drive from Stephenville to Burgeo, a little over a hundred miles on the worst road we’ve encountered in Newfoundland.  Burgeo is a very picturesque seaside village on the southern coast, and the only way in or out to get here is this road.  No gas stations, no convenience stores, nothing but scenery with small scatterings of trailer camps and few houses along the way.

Burgeo Museum
That being said, it is a lovely town wrapped around hills, coves and lakes.  Additionally, Burgeo is the site of a beautiful provincial park,  The local museum was unfortunately closed, but we drove the narrow roads of this village of 2000 enjoying the natural beauty surrounding it.  There is a nice memorial in town with two tablets honoring the local seaman and veterans.

From Cowhouse Hill looking towards Burgeo
Sandstone Provincial Park is beautiful, well laid out with trails and with boardwalks over the vulnerable wetlands.  The views were beautiful during the day, and the sunset was gorgeous in the evening.  We’ll make the long trek north and west tomorrow, but the journey here was well worth it!

Walking from campsite by Heron Pond to the beach

Looking west from Tadi Point

a gorgeous sunset!
